The tourbillon (French for "whirlwind") was invented by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1801 to counteract the effect of gravity on a pocket watch's escapement. In a pocket watch, which sits vertically in a waistcoat pocket, gravity pulls the balance wheel in one direction, causing positional rate variations. Breguet's solution was to mount the escapement and balance wheel in a rotating carriage that completes one revolution per minute — averaging out the gravitational error across all positions. In a modern wristwatch, which moves through all positions naturally as the wrist rotates, the tourbillon provides minimal rate improvement. But it remains the most visually spectacular complication in watchmaking — a rotating, spinning mechanism visible through the dial or caseback that demonstrates the manufacturer's ability to produce extreme miniature mechanics. The tourbillon is the complication that separates haute horlogerie from luxury watchmaking.

The Three Approaches to the Tourbillon

Classical Tourbillon — Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin, Breguet. The tourbillon is visible through the sapphire caseback (not the dial), reflecting the traditional view that the tourbillon is a precision device, not a decorative element.
