The Everest Connection: What Hillary Actually Wore

The official story is that Hillary wore a Rolex Explorer to the summit. The actual history is more complicated. Hillary was issued a Rolex Oyster Perpetual (ref. 6098) by the British Himalayan expedition, but he also carried a Smiths Deluxe to the summit — and may have been wearing the Smiths, not the Rolex, at the moment of arrival. Rolex seized on the expedition for marketing regardless, and the Explorer was born from that association. The ambiguity does not diminish the watch — it enhances it. The Explorer is not a watch that was proven on Everest; it is a watch that was inspired by the ambition to climb Everest. That distinction matters. A: Both are 40mm-or-under steel Rolex watches with no date and smooth bezels. The Explorer has perfect dial symmetry (3/6/9 only, no other markers), a 36mm case, and a more refined presence. The Air-King has an asymmetric dial, a 40mm case, crown guards, and a green seconds hand. The Explorer is the purist's choice; the Air-King is the iconoclast's choice.

Q: Is 36mm too small?
A: On wrists 6–7.5", 36mm is ideal. On wrists 7.5–8", it reads as deliberately understated. On wrists above 8", it may look small. Try one on before deciding — the Explorer wears larger than its measurement suggests because the smooth bezel maximizes dial area.

Q: Why no date?
