The First In-House Daytona

The 116520 is the steel Daytona that changed everything. Produced from 2000 to 2016, it was the first Daytona to feature Rolex's in-house Cal. 4130 chronograph movement — replacing the Zenith-based El Primero caliber used in the preceding 16520. The Cal. 4130 brought column-wheel construction, vertical clutch for seamless chronograph engagement, and 72-hour power reserve. The 116520 also introduced the steel bezel with engraved tachymeter that defined the Daytona's look for 16 years before the ceramic bezel arrived.

The 116520 is now a discontinued transitional reference — the bridge between the vintage Zenith-powered Daytonas and the modern ceramic-bezel era. Its collector significance is growing as the first expression of Rolex's in-house chronograph capability.

White vs. Black

The 116520 was produced in two primary dial configurations:

White dial ("Panda") — White dial with black subdials and outer minute track. The high-contrast Panda configuration is the collector favorite and typically trades at a 5–10% premium over the black dial.

Black dial ("Reverse Panda") — Black dial with white subdials. More versatile for daily wear, hides minor scratches, and pairs well with everything. The practical choice.
