The GMT-Master II is the only watch in the professional catalog that is defined by its bezel color. Every other Rolex model is identified by its function (Submariner = dive, Daytona = chronograph, Explorer = field). The GMT is identified by its nickname: Pepsi, Batman, Root Beer, or Sprite. This is because the two-color ceramic bezel is the most visually expressive element on any Rolex — a 24-hour scale split into two halves that tells you at a glance whether the tracked timezone is in daytime or nighttime hours. The current generation (caliber 3285, 70-hour power reserve) is the most capable GMT ever produced, but its appeal is not functional — it is aesthetic. The Ceramic Bezel: A Manufacturing Breakthrough
Rolex introduced the Cerachrom bezel in 2005 — a single-color ceramic insert that was virtually scratch-proof and fade-resistant. But the GMT-Master II's identity had always depended on two colors, and for eight years Rolex could not produce a two-tone ceramic bezel. The technical challenge was that ceramic is fired at 1,500°C, and different pigments react differently at those temperatures — getting two colors to coexist on a single ring without bleeding at the boundary was considered impossible. In 2013, Rolex solved it with a proprietary process that fires the two halves separately and bonds them at the molecular level during sintering. The result is a seamless color transition that no other manufacturer has replicated at the same quality level. Every two-color GMT bezel on the market today descends from this 2013 breakthrough.

Q: Jubilee or Oyster bracelet?
A: The current steel GMT-Master II is available only on the Jubilee. The previous generation (116710) was Oyster-only. If you prefer the Oyster, you need the older reference or an aftermarket swap.
