The Milgauss (introduced 1956) was designed for scientists and engineers who worked in environments with strong magnetic fields — CERN researchers, power-plant technicians, and medical-imaging operators. The name combines "mille" (1,000) and "gauss" (unit of magnetic induction): the watch was engineered to resist magnetic fields up to 1,000 gauss, which would stop a standard mechanical watch at roughly 60–70 gauss. The antimagnetic shielding is achieved by surrounding the movement with a soft-iron cage (a Faraday shield) that redirects magnetic field lines around the caliber rather than through it. The current generation (ref. 116400GV, caliber 3131) retains this shielding and is one of only two antimagnetic watches in the Rolex catalog (the other is the Oyster Perpetual Air-King). The Milgauss is the Rolex for people who do not need a dive watch, a chronograph, or a GMT — they need a watch that tells the time accurately near an MRI machine.
The Green Sapphire Crystal and Lightning Bolt
Two visual elements distinguish the Milgauss from every other Rolex. The first is the green sapphire crystal — a tinted sapphire that gives the dial a subtle green tint, as if viewed through a bottle. The green crystal is exclusive to the Milgauss; no other Rolex uses tinted sapphire. The second is the lightning-bolt seconds hand — an orange zigzag hand that references the electromagnetic forces the watch was designed to resist. Together, the green crystal and orange lightning bolt create a visual identity that is immediately recognizable and completely unlike any other watch in the professional catalog. The Milgauss is the only Rolex that looks playful — and that playfulness is its appeal.

Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Milgauss or Explorer?
A: Both are no-date, three-hand Rolex watches. The Explorer is the field watch — rugged, legible, heritage-rich. The Milgauss is the scientist's watch — antimagnetic, green crystal, lightning bolt. The Explorer is the safer, more universally recognized choice. The Milgauss is the more distinctive, more conversation-starting choice.
Q: Is the green crystal distracting?
A: In person, the tint is subtle — it adds warmth to the dial without distorting the time display. In photographs, it appears more pronounced. Most owners report that they stop noticing the tint after the first day of wear, but that everyone who sees the watch comments on it.
Q: Does the antimagnetic shielding matter?
A: Only if you work near strong magnetic sources (MRI machines, particle accelerators, high-voltage equipment). For daily wear, the shielding is invisible — you will never notice it. But it is the reason the Milgauss exists, and it gives the watch a functional identity that no other Rolex shares.
