In the late 1930s, two Portuguese businessmen requested precision deck-observed watches from IWC — marine chronometer-grade timepieces that could be worn on the wrist. IWC responded by housing its hunter-pocket-watch calibers in oversized cases (43–44mm), fitted with thin bezels and ultra-legible Arabic numerals. The result was too large for the era and production was minimal, but the design was rediscovered in the 1990s when oversized watches became fashionable.
