Thin gold wires are bent into the shapes of continents, oceans, and geographic features, placed on a gold dial plate, and filled with enamel paste in multiple colors. The dial is fired in a kiln at 800°C, causing the enamel to fuse into a smooth, glass-like surface. The result is a miniature map of the world — hand-painted, kiln-fired, and unique to each dial (no two cloisonné dials are identical because the enamel flows differently in each firing).
