When Lange unveiled the Odysseus in 2019, it shattered decades of house tradition in a single stroke. No Lange wristwatch before it had been built from stainless steel for regular production, carried an integrated bracelet, or targeted active lifestyles. The reference 363.179 announced that Glashütte's most meticulous manufacture could compete directly in the steel luxury-sport segment pioneered by the Royal Oak and Nautilus — and do so with double-assembled movements, hand-engraved balance cocks, and Glashütte ribbing visible through a sapphire caseback.
Waiting lists at authorized dealers stretched past five years almost immediately. On the secondary market the steel Odysseus routinely traded at 100–200 % above retail, placing it among the most demanded sport watches in production.

Steel commands the higher secondary premium — an unusual inversion driven entirely by scarcity and the watch community's obsession with integrated-bracelet steel sport pieces.
Lange could have adapted an existing movement. Instead, the manufacture designed a completely new caliber. The L155.1 Datomatic uses a bidirectional platinum-tipped rotor visible through the sapphire back, a free-sprung balance for long-term stability, and a proprietary day-date mechanism correctable via recessed pushers on the case band. Like every Lange movement, it is assembled twice: once to verify timing and function, then fully disassembled, decorated by hand, and reassembled for delivery. The three-quarter German silver plate, hand-engraved balance cock, and blued screws are all present — proof that this is genuine haute horlogerie beneath a sport exterior.
The integrated bracelet is as much an engineering exercise as the movement. Hollow middle links shed weight without sacrificing rigidity. Each link is individually screwed — not pinned — for Lange-grade security. The profile tapers from 20 mm at the lugs to 16 mm at the deployant clasp, which includes a tool-free micro-adjustment for on-the-fly sizing. Despite its sport purpose, every link surface receives the hand-polishing and satin-brushing expected from Glashütte's finest.
The Odysseus speaks to a specific collector: someone who appreciates Lange's obsessive finishing but wants a watch they can wear beyond black-tie events. It competes with the Patek Nautilus, the Royal Oak, and the Vacheron Overseas on design territory — yet it stands apart through its movement finishing, which none of those competitors can match at the same level.
For investment-minded collectors, the Odysseus has demonstrated exceptional value retention since launch, particularly the steel bracelet variant.
Our 47th Street specialists handle Lange transactions regularly and understand the nuances that determine Odysseus value: bracelet condition (hairline scratches on polished center links reduce offers), set completeness (box, papers, and warranty card are essential at six-figure values), and dial variant. The secondary market for these watches is thin — we maintain direct relationships with qualified Lange buyers globally, ensuring competitive pricing that a generalist dealer cannot match.
