In 1952, Breitling created the Navitimer — a wrist-worn navigation computer with a circular slide rule that allowed pilots to calculate fuel consumption, airspeed, and climb rate mid-flight. It became the official watch of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and remains the most recognizable pilot's chronograph ever made. That aviation DNA runs through the entire collection today: every Breitling carries a COSC-certified chronometer movement, and the brand is one of the few to equip nearly all models with chronograph complications as standard.

Breitling's Caliber B01, introduced in 2009, was a watershed moment for the brand. Developed and manufactured entirely in-house at the Breitling Chronométrie facility in La Chaux-de-Fonds, it features a column-wheel chronograph mechanism, a 70-hour power reserve, and a vertical clutch for precise engagement — the same architecture found in movements costing twice the price. Every B01-equipped watch is individually COSC-certified before leaving the factory. For pre-owned buyers, the B01 generation represents a significant step up in quality and reliability compared to earlier ETA-based calibers, and models equipped with it command a premium on the secondary market.
Breitling's pricing structure creates excellent opportunities on the secondary market. Unlike steel sport watches from certain competitors, Breitling models do not trade above retail — which means pre-owned buyers enjoy substantial savings. A Navitimer B01 in steel that retails for over $9,000 can typically be acquired pre-owned in the $5,500–$7,000 range with box and papers. Chronomat and Avenger references offer even deeper discounts. For buyers who prioritize COSC-certified chronograph performance over resale speculation, the pre-owned Breitling market is one of the best values in Swiss watchmaking.
