The Radiomir is where Panerai began. In 1935, the Italian Royal Navy commissioned Officine Panerai to produce a diving watch for its frogmen — underwater demolition specialists who needed a timepiece legible at depth in the Mediterranean. Panerai's solution was a 47mm cushion-shaped case with wire lugs soldered to the case body, a luminescent dial (using a patented radium-based compound called "Radiomir"), and a waterproof movement. The wire-lug construction was dictated by military necessity: the watch was worn over a dive suit, and the wire lugs allowed a thick leather strap to pass through easily. The Radiomir is the most historically authentic Panerai — the watch that started the brand's identity as a military-equipment supplier that happened to make watches.
The Radiomir and the Luminor are Panerai's two design languages. The Radiomir has wire lugs, a thin cushion case, and no crown-protecting bridge — it is the vintage military Panerai. The Luminor has a crown-protecting bridge (the iconic half-moon lever), thicker lugs, and a more robust case — it is the modern Panerai. The Radiomir is for collectors who want the original military aesthetic; the Luminor is for collectors who want the contemporary Panerai identity.

Q: Radiomir or Luminor?
A: The Radiomir is the vintage military Panerai — wire lugs, thinner case, dressier proportions. The Luminor is the modern Panerai — crown bridge, thicker case, sportier presence. The Radiomir is the connoisseur's choice; the Luminor is the crowd's choice.
Q: Is 47mm too big?
A: The cushion case wears smaller than its measurement — the short wire lugs keep the footprint tight. On wrists 7"+, the 47mm works. The 45mm is the more versatile size for wrists 6.5–7.5".
