Georges-Edouard Piaget established his atelier in La Côte-aux-Fées in 1874, initially producing ultra-thin ébauche movements for other Geneva manufactures. By 1957, Piaget had developed the caliber 9P — a hand-wound movement measuring just 2mm thick, making it one of the thinnest mechanical movements ever produced. Three years later, the caliber 12P became the world's thinnest automatic movement at 2.3mm. These two calibers defined Piaget's identity: if a watch could be made thinner without sacrificing reliability, Piaget would make it. That obsession with slimness led naturally into high jewelry — the ultra-thin movements allowed cases that could be set with gemstones without becoming unwearable. The Polo: Sport Elegance from the 1970s

In 1979, Piaget launched the Polo — an integrated-bracelet watch with a solid gold case that blended sport-watch architecture with dress-watch refinement. The design featured horizontal and vertical gadroons (raised channels) running across the dial, bezel, and bracelet in a continuous visual flow. The Polo was an immediate hit among the international jet set of the late 1970s — the kind of watch worn at Studio 54 and on the polo fields of Palm Beach.
