The 1908 is Rolex's dedicated dress watch — a clean, time-only design that replaced the Cellini line in 2023. Named after the year Rolex was registered as a trademark, the 1908 signals a return to pure watchmaking: no date, no rotating bezel, no sport pretensions. Just hours, minutes, seconds, and a 39mm case in precious metal.

The 39mm size is deliberate. It splits the difference between the 36mm Datejust (which Rolex still positions as a sport-dress hybrid) and the 40mm Day-Date (which is a statement piece). At 39mm, the 1908 sits flush on the wrist under a shirt cuff — the proportions are optimized for formal wear in a way that no other current Rolex is.

Movement and Construction

The Cal. 7140 inside the 1908 is certified by COSC and additionally carries Rolex's Superlative Chronometer certification (–2/+2 seconds per day). The movement features a balance wheel with Rolex's Syloxi hairspring — paramagnetic, virtually unaffected by shocks or temperature changes. The case is produced exclusively in 18k yellow gold (52509) and 18k white gold (52509), with a domed sapphire crystal on both sides: the caseback is transparent, exposing the decorated movement.

Available Configurations

52508 (Yellow Gold, Black Dial) — Intense black lacquer dial with applied Roman numerals and an alligator leather strap. The contrast of black on yellow gold is the bolder 1908 option.

52509 (White Gold, Silver Dial) — Silver-white guilloché dial with applied Roman numerals and alligator strap. The subtler choice — white gold reads almost like steel, and the guilloché texture adds depth.
